The animal kingdom is full of weird and wonderfull adaptations, but not many animals have a weirder habit then the Ringtail Possum who eats it's own poo!

The common ringtail possum is a folivore, meaning it lives largely on leaves. Prior to the introduction of exotic plant species the majority of the ring tail possums diet would be made up of eucalyptus leaves which contain very low levels on nutrients. To cope with this lack of nutrition, the Ring Tail Possum has evolved the rarther strange habit of eating its own droppings. What happens is the possum spends their nights crawling around the canopy eating the softest tips of the leaves, during the night the possum excretes a normal hard dropping which falls to the ground below. During the day however the possum returns to its nest called a "drey" where it produced a different softer dropping that it actually consumes. The consumption of those dropping mean the gumleaves travel through the ring tail possums digestive tract not once, but twice, in an effort to extract every little bit of goodness the plants have to offer
