This video was originally posted in September of 2011. Nina, Nigel and Nigella are three dogs who had been living on the streets of East St. Louis for years. Gateway Pet Guardians had been caring for them for three years on the streets. They technically had an "owner" so we were not allowed to take them into our foster program. Nina suffered from a sexually transmitted tumor, Nigel had mange and fleas, and all of them were heartworm positive.

The area that these dogs were living in had a high crime rate and many of the people there live in poverty. The police did not have time to meddle in animal welfare issues and the county animal control did not investigate animal cruelty cases.

Eventually we were able to obtain permission from their owner to rescue all three and they are happily living in comfortable homes. We were able to provide veterinary care for all of them thanks to donations from supporters.

In the years that have passed since their rescue, Gateway Pet Guardians has formed a relationship with the local animal control facility, brought on 12 certified humane investigators to help cite residents who aren't providing proper care for their pets, and they've also formed an education program to help teach community members proper pet care and provide them with low-cost vet care resources.
